The Day We Were Robbed: A Lesson in Community Vigilance
This story, shared with us by a client several years ago, serves as a stark reminder of why we must practice vigilance and why we should stay connected with our neighbors as much as possible.
My wife and I were living a normal, routine life in an average suburb. We were building our careers and had settled into a comfortable rhythm: up in the morning, breakfast, and off to work by 7:00 AM, returning home around 7:00 PM.
Unbeknownst to us, during this very routine, criminals were plotting against us. For about three weeks, a crime syndicate had been executing an elaborate scheme. Every morning, about an hour after we left for work, they would place two fake “House for Sale” signs on our lawn. Then, just before we returned in the evening, they would remove them.
Our neighbors later told us they had seen the signs but, thinking nothing of it, assumed we were simply preparing to sell the house. No one thought to call and ask.
The scheme culminated on the night we came home to the biggest shock of our lives. Our house had been completely emptied. Everything was gone.

Stunned, we called the police and went to our neighbors across the street. When we buzzed their intercom, they sounded surprised to hear our voices. After they let us in, they asked, “Did you come back to say goodbye?”
We were confused, but the truth soon became clear. A large moving truck had pulled up to our house and methodically removed all our belongings. Our neighbors, having seen the “For Sale” signs for weeks, assumed we were moving out. It all seemed perfectly normal.

The harm was done, and there was nothing we could do to reverse it. While we were relieved to learn the syndicate was caught and brought to justice about two years later, the experience left a permanent mark.
Vigilance – The Takeaway:
This story isn’t just about a robbery; it’s about communication and vigilance. A simple conversation between neighbors could have prevented this entire ordeal. Let this be a lesson to all of us: be aware of your surroundings, and maintain open channels with your community. If something seems unusual, don’t hesitate to reach out. Your vigilance could be what protects your neighborhood.
